The Razor dirt bikes are already among the best electric dirt bikes for kids, based on their performance. Right out of the box, the Razor MX650 features a 36V battery and a 650W motor that allows speeds of up to 17 mph with a travel time of approximately 40 minutes. For a complete beginner, this can get the job done. If you’re like me, upgrading a Razor dirt bike is one of the first things I do after purchasing it. The battery, motor, suspension and brakes are all things that will benefit greatly from an upgrade.

“I personally owned a Razor MX350 as a kid and it was the perfect toy when I really wanted to ride, but getting my dirt bike out of the garage was out of the question,” explains Ryan Dragunas, who else I tested the Razor MX650. “One problem I always had with the Razor, however, was that it was a little too slow for my liking and there was no way to upgrade Razor dirt bikes back then.”

Precautions before upgrading

Before upgrading your Razor dirt bike, stay safe by having the right safety equipment. Before upgrading, make sure all dirt bike issues have been resolved. If you’re installing the upgrades yourself, make sure you have the right tools and a well-lit work area.

How to Update Razor Dirt Bikes: Step by Step Guide

Step 1: Upgrading the battery and motor

When Razor dirt bike upgradesThere are a few battery There are many motor kits on the market for the Razor, but I highly recommend the 5,000W kit or the 11,000W kit from Electro & Co. Electro & Co. is the market leader and produces drop-in kits for various large and small dirt bikes.

The 11,000W kit includes an upgraded battery, motor, controller and MX throttle with a 3-mode switch. A handlebar-mounted power switch, voltmeter and included MX grips increase ease of use and control.

With the 5,000W kit you get a slightly weaker battery, motor and controller. Just like the other kit, it uses a new MX throttle as well as included MX grips and a handlebar mounted power switch.

You can expect speeds of 50 MPH or 60+MPH with different gear ratio of the 11,000W kit and 2-4 hours driving time. Speeds of 45+MPH are possible with different gear ratios of the 5,000 W kit with driving times of 2-4 hours.

Step 2: Improved suspension system

If you want more than just speed, another great improvement now available on Razor electric dirt bikes is a suspension upgrade.

For the front forks, I recommend the ETM hydraulic fork upgrade. These heavy-duty motocross forks come in a kit that allows for direct bolt-on installation. The kit replaces the stock handlebars, handlebar mounts, triple clamps, forks, front wheel, wheel parts, front fender and other small parts.

You should upgrade the rear shock absorber to match the new performance of the front fork. I recommend the DNM rear shock upgrade. This shock combines with the ETM front fork upgrade and also offers adjustable rebound and damping. The ETM front fork kit update for Razor and the DNM damper.

Step 3: Improving braking performance

While the MX650 already has disc brakes, I highly recommend upgrading to hydraulic disc brakes.

With a dirt bike that can travel 50 miles per hour or faster, it is absolutely important that you be able to stop in a timely manner to avoid injury. There are several options for upgrading the Razor to hydraulic facilities. Just like with the other upgrades, there is an option for this with electrics and the like.

If you’re looking for a more cost-effective setup, there are options on Amazon like the Zoom Hydraulic Disc Brake Set. Keep in mind that kits like these are more of a general purpose kit. Therefore, be sure to find out about any modifications or special tools required before purchasing.

Step 4: Upgrading tires and wheels

When it comes to balance bikes, you can usually go with the original wheels to save some money.

If you’re upgrading to one of the more powerful kits, it might be a good idea to install slightly larger wheels. This makes the dirt bike easier to control and the rear wheel spins less, which means better traction.

When it comes to tires, this depends on the type of driving you do.

  • If you drive exclusively off-road, I recommend an aggressive knobby tire from reputable brands such as Dunlop, Pirelli, Maxxis, Michelin, etc.
  • If you ride supermoto or primarily on paved surfaces, I would recommend a street tire like the Kenda KM1 or the Continental Conti Tour.
  • Consider “dual sport” tires, which provide good traction on paved surfaces and off-road. A good example of these tires are the Kenda K760 Trakmaster Dual Sport or Dunlop D605 Dual Sport tires.

Things like a DOT-approved helmet, goggles, gloves, knee pads, elbow pads, heavy-duty pants/jerseys, and chest protectors are all pieces of equipment you should use at a minimum.

Additional add-ons

Aside from the upgrades mentioned above, there are other ways to upgrade your Razor dirt bike to improve your riding experience or add a little more flair to your electric dirt bike. Things like pivot levers, handlebars, seats and handles can be swapped out for a unique riding experience. Plastics, graphics and wheel colors can be changed to add a personal touch.
