2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger Channels Chevy Volt Tech

The next Ram 1500 pickup will take a three-pronged approach: the redesigned lineup three gas engineswhich were previously announced Battery electric truck Ram REVand the new Ramcharger model, which is always powered by a battery but has a motor generator to charge the battery and increase range.

Ram announced the new lineup on Tuesday, confirming the Ramcharger model for the first time.

While the all-electric Ram REV will offer two battery pack sizes of 168 or 229 kWh, the 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger will be a plug-in series hybrid with a 92 kWh battery offering a range of up to 145 miles. From there, a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 acts as a generator to charge the battery and increase range by another 545 miles to 690 miles. Each motor is part of an electric drive unit, which also includes the transmission and the power electronics. The engine can deliver a continuous output of 130 kW (174 hp) or a peak output of 190 kW (253 hp). However, Ram hasn’t detailed how to run the engine (at what speed, how often, etc.) to charge the battery. The front motor can be decoupled for better efficiency.

The Ramcharger will ride on the new ladder-frame STLA frame platform shared with the Ram REV, although it will be modified to fit the front engine. The battery sits in the middle of the frame in front of a 27-gallon gas tank. The system behaves similarly to the Chevrolet Volt from more than a decade ago, but it never creates a direct connection between the engine and wheels, so the battery always provides power.

Ram will equip the Ramcharger with an advanced suspension that includes a short-long arm geometry up front with cast aluminum lower control arms, a multi-link independent rear suspension, adaptive dampers and air springs with up to five inches of ground clearance. The truck will ride on sturdier LT tires mounted on 8-hole wheels.

There is a 250 kW motor on the front axle and a 238 kW motor on the rear axle for all-wheel drive and a total of 663 hp and 615 lb-ft of torque. Ram cites jaw-dropping performance numbers: 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds, 2,625 pounds of payload capacity and the ability to tow up to 14,000 pounds.

Using a switch on the steering wheel, drivers can choose between the driving modes “Normal”, “Max Regeneration” or “Single Pedal”. Next to the electronic gearshift lever there are buttons for three drive modes: Electric+, E-Save and Eco. With Electric+, the electricity comes from the battery and works with the motor generator. The first 145 miles are driven only by electric vehicles, which drains the battery. The engine then switches on to charge the battery. E-Save mode runs the engine to charge the battery so it can power the vehicle. Eco mode is the most efficient. It prioritizes all-electric driving and adjusts pedal mapping and climate control to optimize range. Ram will also offer Auto, Sport, Snow, Tow and Off-Road driving modes.

The Ramcharger comes with a 12-volt battery that prevents radio interference. Its lithium-ion battery can be charged from a 240-volt socket with an output of 11.0 kW or, thanks to a 400-volt on-board network, achieve a range of 50 miles in 10 minutes with a DC fast charger. It is also suitable for bi-directional charging, allowing vehicle-to-vehicle or vehicle-to-home charging. A socket in the bed can also be used to power tools with an output of 3.8 kW for 110-volt devices or 7.2 kW for 240-volt devices such as circular saws.

The design is similar to the Ram REV. It features LED headlights that send horizontal elements into the large grille, and at the rear, the taillights extend into the tailgate to provide a unique lighting signature.

Ram hasn’t detailed the full model lineup yet, but it did say that the Ramcharger will be offered in the new top-end Tungsten trim level, which takes luxury to a new level for those who simply can’t spend enough on trucks. Each Ramcharger will feature a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch portrait center touchscreen, and a 10.3-inch passenger screen will also be available.

Two active driver assistance systems are offered, one requiring the driver’s hands to remain on the steering wheel and another that allows limited hands-free driving; In both cases, the driver must pay attention to the road. The Ramcharger will also offer automatic parking.

The Ramcharger is expected to hit the market in late 2024 or early 2025. Ram said it still needs to be determined whether he will be eligible for the federal electric vehicle tax credit. Prices, a complete model range and complete equipment will be available shortly before market launch.
