Loic Bruni, as always, has given his candid opinion on how he thinks this new discipline compares to good old off-road cycling:

I’m surprised that’s his opinion considering this event is much more likely to be included in the Olympics than the traditional DH since all the infrastructure for the much larger ski events is already in place. But hey, you “only advance the sport when it directly benefits you.”

He says it’s not the sport of mountain biking, so “growing the sport” doesn’t apply in his eyes. I agree, it’s not really mountain biking, even though they ride mountain bikes. The fact that this is the case in the Olympics will not help downhill mountain biking gain popularity among non-professionals beyond crossover racers.
