2025 Ram 1500 becomes 6-cylinder, swaps TRX for RHO

Since Ram plans to expand its 1500 pickup lineup with battery electric (called REV) And Plug-in series hybrid models, the gas version will receive a redesign for 2025 and the electric vehicles will arrive later in the year. Ram introduced the next-generation 1500 gasoline model on Tuesday, marking the end of the Hemi engine and TRX model.

The Hemi gives way to the Hurricane twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six already in use in the Jeep Wagoneer Great Wagoneer. In its base form for the 1500, the engine produces 420 hp and 469 lb-ft of torque, the same as in other applications. The high-performance version increases output to 540 hp and 521 lb-ft thanks to 28 psi boost. The HO version makes 145 more horsepower and 110 pounds more than the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 it replaces. Ram says it is also more efficient. Aluminum is used for the block, cylinder head and oil pan. The base engine remains the 3.6-liter V6 with eTorque. In the current model it produces 305 hp and 269 lb-ft, with the eTorque electric motor adding a further 90 lb-ft. Each engine will come with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The HO engine will appear in the new RHO model, which will be released at the end of the year. It will replace the TRX as the most powerful off-roader, but with less than that model’s 702 horsepower and at a lower price. However, expect full off-road suspension and protection from the TRX.

Every 2025 Ram 1500 will feature a new, fully boxed ladder frame constructed from 95% high-strength steel. Ram says it will have improved durability and rigidity as well as reduced weight. However, maximum towing capacity will drop slightly from 12,750 pounds in the current model to 11,580 pounds. Maximum payload remains unchanged at 2,300 pounds and the truck can traverse up to 24 inches of water.

The new Ram will use a double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension with coil springs. It will also offer four-corner air suspension with five ride heights and adaptive dampers. Open or limited-slip differentials will be available, as will an electronically locking rear differential and three axle ratios: 3:21, 3:55 and 3:92. For high-performance models there will be a new high-torque rear axle with a 25 mm larger ring gear.

Ram’s 2025 model lineup will take a three-pronged approach: the core line of work trucks, a line of sport trucks and a line of luxury trucks highlighted by the new range-topping Tungsten lineup. The complete model range will consist of the Tradesman, Big Horn/Lone Star, Laramie, Rebel, Limited Longhorn and Limited models. Ram also promised Warlock and Rebel models in the sport truck lineup, as well as the RHO, but didn’t say whether they will be trim levels or option packages.

A revised exterior design is far more evolution than revolution. A total of eight radiator grilles are offered per model; All will be larger and have larger “RAM” lettering set higher. LED headlights will be standard and Limited and higher models will receive adaptive headlights with different greeting and departure sequences. The Tungsten will also get LED fog lights.

The familiar RamBox system, with bedside storage and a 115-volt outlet, will return, but Ram hasn’t said in which models. Newly available is an electric tailgate that can be opened using a key fob. Buyers can also get a bed rail system with four sliding cleats. Ram will also offer a 2kW onboard inverter for the bed to power plug-in tools, lights, etc.

More screen real estate highlights the interior of the new 1500. Ram hasn’t said whether they will be standard, but the truck will feature a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.5-inch portrait-mode infotainment screen to run the Uconnect 5 system. A 10.3-inch passenger screen is also offered as an option or on higher-priced models.

Other high-end features include 24-way power front seats with massage, heating and cooling; a 23-speaker, 1,375-watt, 24-channel Klipsch audio system; Dual wireless smartphone chargers; and a phone-as-key feature. The Tungsten will have a diamond theme (because tungsten is about as hard as a diamond) and each truck will receive a badge on the center console with an inlaid metal Tungsten logo in a crystal lens with an embossed VIN number. Every Ram features a driver footrest and a new electrical architecture with over-the-air update capability.

The 2025 Ram 1500 is offered with two active driver assistance systems. A will requires the driver’s hands to remain on the steering wheel. Adaptive cruise control and active lane assistant are used for other driving tasks. A hands-free version requires looking at the road, but the driver’s hands don’t always have to be on the wheel. It will also be able to perform lane changes. Ram will also offer trailer hitch alignment assist, a rearview mirror with camera, and automatic parking.

The 2025 Ram 1500 is scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2024, the RHO is scheduled for the third quarter, and the new Ramcharger will arrive in the fourth quarter. Pricing, full specifications and a full list of features will be available closer to launch.
