2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger Plug-in Hybrid Pickup Pair V-6 Large EV Battery

Ram has confirmed early details on a pickup truck that no other automaker has yet dared to build, but that could potentially offer the best of both worlds: a plug-in series hybrid truck.

The truck, which Ram calls the “Ramcharger,” is said to offer “a groundbreaking unlimited battery-electric range.”

The Ramcharger always has an electric drive on the wheels, but this is supported by electricity from an internal combustion engine. Ram quotes a 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds for the 1500 Ramcharger, which will have 663 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque.

With a 92 kWh battery pack, the Ramcharger can travel 145 miles on electric power alone from the battery, then another 545 miles using the gasoline engine, which drives a generator that delivers up to 190 kW or 130 kW of continuous power and acts as a range extender.

To be clear about the configuration: the Ramcharger engine will not have a direct connection to the wheels. This task is carried out by two electric motor systems – 250 kW at the front and 238 kW at the rear. While driving, the motors optimize drive between the front and rear wheels, sometimes even using just one or the other, Ram said.

An electric vehicle without range anxiety?

On the other hand, the Ram REV battery-electric truck stands for Ram Electric Vehicle or Revolution. While 2025 Ram 1500 REV The Ramcharger owner with a smaller battery has 168 kWh standard range batteries or 229 kWh extended range batteries for up to 500 miles of truck range.

In this extended range mode, after using up most of the battery charge, the Ramcharger can travel an additional 545 miles on gasoline through what Ram says is the most efficient use of the front and rear engines, while also balancing the use of the generator battery pack . It also includes control logic to combine friction braking and regenerative braking.

“It’s not a PHEV. “It performs like a pure battery-electric truck – all the instantaneous torque, all the power… but without the drawbacks,” Kuniskis said in a preview of the truck to the press.

Why aren’t there other plugins like this?

There’s one downside to series hybrids: They’re rarely an efficient option on the highway, and Ram’s numbers point to the same problem.

With a quick calculation and given the Ramcharger’s 27-gallon fuel tank, you can expect this truck to get around 20 mpg in range extender mode. That’s significantly less than the ratings of a number of non-hybrid pickups – or the Ford F-150 Hybridgiving an EPA-rated figure of 24 mpg.

For example, low highway mileage with a series hybrid system is the main reason Honda pairs the engine with the wheels Two-mode hybrid system under light-load highway conditions, and for this reason GM chose to add a mechanical drive linkage Voltec system for the Chevy Voltand why that Nissan e-Power Hybrid The system might be different for the US

But outside of the Fisker Karma and his Karma GS-6 Descendants, such a system is unprecedented. None of these systems took advantage of this configuration, which combines plug-in capability and a fairly large battery.

However, the layout is fully consistent with the same towing and hauling capabilities as Ram’s ICE trucks. Ram conducted the Davis Dam test with the Ramcharger, and in such a situation it draws power from both the battery and the generator. On a long-distance journey on the motorway, after the main charge has been used up, the truck largely drives in so-called charge-sustaining mode, meaning the engine runs continuously. Stellantis gave no idea what engine operation would be like at these loads.

REV or Ramcharger: All-round fast charging

The Ramcharger can achieve a range of up to 50 miles in about 10 minutes, with a peak power of up to 145 kW. The Ram REV can charge with up to 350 kW.

Drivers can choose between Electric+, E-Save and Eco modes, with the former storing power for later and the latter prioritizing electric drive and minimizing engine consumption.

STLA frame platform

STLA frame platform

The Ram REV and Ramcharger use essentially the same STLA frame platform, with the battery and fuel tank encapsulated in the fuel rails – the battery pack under the passenger compartment and the tank under the bed. The 92 kWh battery uses NMC lithium-ion chemistry (lithium manganese cobalt) with 12 modules.

The suspension is a short-long arm suspension at the front and a multi-link suspension at the rear. Four-corner air suspension and adaptive damping systems are standard on STLA frame vehicles. The air suspension offers a lower entry and exit height as well as an aero mode and two off-road modes. There are also five dynamic driving modes – Auto, Sport, Tow, Snow and Off-Road – that optimize throttle response, brake energy regeneration, suspension response and steering. And an electronic differential lock allows for safe driving in various conditions.

Ram hasn’t said anything about how many Ram REV and Ramcharger models it plans to build, but has indicated that it sees the Ramcharger as a slightly more limited offering aimed at buyers who are considering an electric vehicle but decide against it for several reasons.

All of these models are equipped with technical features. In upper trim levels, these Ram trucks offer a 14.5-inch touchscreen in the center of the dashboard as well as a 10.3-inch passenger screen that only the front passenger can see, including an HDMI input and mirroring for phones or tablets . There’s also a 12.3-inch reconfigurable instrument display, as well as a full-color head-up display with automatic emergency braking, lane monitoring and other adaptive safety features.

The Ramcharger and Ram REV offer a smartphone-based digital key system with an NFC-based smart card for backup access.

A look at the entire Ram lineup, which still includes a wide range of gasoline models that don’t look all that similar to the REV and Ramcharger, ranges from the basic Tradesman truck to the sporty Rebel and the new top-of-the-line Tungsten.

Ram didn’t ignore its other non-electrified gasoline light trucks. The Hemi V8 engines are dispensed with and a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged inline-six is offered instead – including a 540 hp high-performance version that is included in the RHO Performance version.

While Ram electrifies, a new look

Across the model range, the Ram family has an even more upright appearance at the front, inspired by the brand’s heavy-duty trucks, with an even larger emblem. On some models, the steel bumper is omitted in favor of a refined, aerodynamically optimized front apron, and there is also an almost flush loading area and cabin for aerodynamic reasons. Top Tungsten models feature a suede-trimmed headliner, heated and cooled 24-way massage quilted leather front seats and 23-speaker audio. On the top models, Stellantis will also introduce a new hands-free driving assistance function with “Level 2+” automated driving capability.

The Ramcharger could prove to be a great companion for camping and RV use. A 7.2kW power system is enough to charge an entire campsite of supplies, and for towing, the truck also has a camera system that detects the towball ball head and automatically handles all steering while operating the accelerator and brake is superfluous to the driver.

In 2021, Ram introduced a truck called the Range Electric Paradigm Breaker (REPB). Now it’s clear what the company was talking about. Whether this is truly the beginning of a new plug-in paradigm is still unproven.
